Update to TPN’s server crash

Well we’ve got new drives installed and we’re going to be rebuilding the old sites from backups as fast as possible. Unfortunately, we recently outgrew the service we were using to backup the architecture and media files (we have over 500Gb of media files) and this crash happened before I managed to get a bigger backup drive configured. It’s always the way. As a result we’ve lost the old media files, so we’ll be getting the hosts to re-upload as many as possible. In addition, we’ll be providing an FTP drop box for the audience to send us any files they have that we don’t. And I’m also hoping we’ll be able to find a data forensic service that can pull stuff from our old dead drive. So I think we’ll be okay. It’ll probably take us a week to get all of the current shows back up and running. Thanks for all of the messages of support I’ve been getting via email and twitter.

As most of you know, TPN is a bootstrap operation. In an effort to build a genuinely new and independent media company, we haven’t taken any funding and I’ve been paying for it out of my own pocket for the last four years, with assistance from a little bit of advertising and your generous pledge donations. On the smell of an oily rag we’ve built a range of shows with an average of 400 - 500,000 listeners a month who download about 800,000 episodes each month (12 TERABYTES of out-bound traffic) and provide about 8 million page views. When you run a site with those stats on sticky-tape and chewing gum, sometimes stuff happens. Unfortunately this year we’ve had two major disasters - we were hacked back in March and now this hard drive failure.

But I’m proud of what we’ve built with so little resources and I want to thank everyone for their continued support. We’ll be back shortly.

On Saturday Dec 20, the hard drive on TPN’s server suddenly died. We are in the process of restoring and re-building all of our sites and will have all of the shows back online asap.

Edinburgh Fringe Time Again!

Stan The Man Talks Podcasting

TPN’s Stan Relihan (The Connections Show) was interviewed by IT Wire recently about his thoughts on the future of podcasting.

According to Relihan, putting the iPhone in the hands of senior executives will be an explosive mixture that has never happened before and will take the adoption of podcasting to a new level.

“Now that the iPhone has been launched globally with multiple carriers, it’s going to get major penetration. What that does is that there are many managing directors and senior executives in organisations that would probably never have an iPod but would get an iPhone for all its other functions, which automatically puts an iPod in their pockets,” says Relihan.

TPN update 29/04/08

Hey folks, just a quick update about the state of TPN’s servers. Those brand new servers we’ve been building have taken a bit longer to get up and running than we had hoped. The techs are working their asses off and at the moment we expect the new servers to be running in the next 48 hours. The gods are obviously cranky with me at the moment. What did I do???

Anyway, in the meantime, you might notice a few glitches across TPN, with rss feeds, etc. If you do, please take a screenshot and email me CAMERON REILLY.

Duncan Riley, founder of “The Blog Herald, co-founder of b5 Media, and presently a writer for TechCrunch, joins TPN today with his new podcast “On The Pod“.
On The Pod features guests that might otherwise not have a high profile yet have something interesting to say. The topics vary from Web 2.0, through to Tech and general politics including labor issues and topical events. On The Pod aims to provides something different amongst the swarm of podcasts, great listening fodder for the commuter or frequent traveler.

If you know Duncan’s work, you’ll be aware that he is known for his particular “take no bullshit” style, so I can’t wait to hear his interviews! His first episode features an interview with serial blogger, David Krug.

TPN launches “The Better World Show”

TPN Position Opening/s

I am looking for a new person to help us run TPN’s backend. This isn’t a full-time position as yet, just a part-time after hours kind of gig but with a view to making it a full-time position with TPN stock options at some stage this year. Interested parties should email me with their CV. It doesn’t matter where in the world you live, as long as you are on broadband, and prepared to work your ass off to get a piece of TPN’s future.

Network/Server Administrator

The applicant should have an advanced understanding of the following skills with approximately 3 years or more of experience in Network/Server Administration

* Sound knowledge of Apache/UNIX server configuration, Redhat Enterprise and maintenance
* Advanced mySQL database knowledge and experience (import/export backup and retrieval)
* Advanced knowledge in IP configuration, DNS,UDP and advanced networking
* Firewall configuration/IP tables/wrappers and cron configuration
* Traffic analysis/statistics (awstats)
* Mailserver config/maintenance Qmail
* Server load balancing (preferable)
* PHP/XHTML/CSS knowledge preferable
* Understanding of web hosting and co-location

Software Developer/Engineer (PHP)
o 3 years experience minimal in advanced PHP programming and open source packages, experienced in the following applications:
o Sound knowledge of Wordpress development, customization and deployment
o Advanced knowledge of RSS and Atom content feed aggregation and syndication. Trouble shooting and debugging feeds for validation.
o Experience in mySQL (creation, import/export backup and retrieval)
o Experience in publishing audio podcasts and video (preferable)
o Traffic analysis/statistics preferable
o Javascript/AJAX/XHTML/CSS
o CARP Evolution (preferable)
o Excellent problem solving skills

Ross Dawson of Future Exploration Network has compiled a list of Aussie Web2.0 startups for ReadWriteWeb. He was nice enough to include TPN in the top five with Omnidrive, Atlassian, Gnoos and Minti. I’m still not exactly sure that TPN is a Web2.0 company and I’m not sure Atlassian (enterprise wiki software) is either… or Omnidrive (online file storage) for that matter (although Ross says it is becoming “a highly diverse, deeply integrated online utility”, whatever that means). Anyway… it’s all good exposure. RWW has a pretty huge readership. Thanks Ross.

The Jazz Show.

It has been a fantastic Spring thus far here in Atlanta, and every weekend I invite everyone I know over to celebrate the lovely weather in my backyard. This weekend is a holiday weekend in the United States so most everyone has Monday off, making it a three-day weekend. Lots of friends have joined me this weekend and we’ve been enjoying two of my favorite gadgets: my iPod and a JBL On Stage, both in black. I have a perfect spot for it on the patio, where I plug it in and turn it up loud. Today, it has played lots of The Jazz Show. My friends, slightly drunk, yell “more Jazz Show” after each one ends. It’s a beautiful thing! Thanks Thom!
